Places category system

HERE Geocoding and Search results of type place expose in their categories field a list of category references of Level 3.

Category levels

The HERE places category system provides three levels of granularity:

  • Level 1 - Categories that are organized into logical high-level groupings.

    For example, "100" represents the top level category for places associated with eating and drinking establishments (100="Eat and Drink").

  • Level 2 - Categories organized by logical sub-groups or domains.

    For example, "100-1000" represents the mid-level category for places associated with eating and drinking establishments that are restaurants (100-1000="Eat and Drink / Restaurant").

  • Level 3 - Categories that provide the greatest level of granularity about place categorization.

    For example, "100-1000-0001" is the complete category code for places associated with eating and drinking establishments that are casual dining restaurants (100-1000-0001="Eat and Drink / Restaurant / Casual Dining").

The following sections are organized by level 1 categories, and Level 2 and level 3 categories are found within their associated level 1 categories.

For example, 100-1000-0001 is documented within the 100 - Eat and Drink section.

100 - Eat and Drink

The Eat and Drink category is a top level category for places where food or beverages are prepared or served.

This category contains the following level 2 categories:

  • Restaurant - An establishment that prepares and serves refreshments and prepared meals.
  • Coffee and Tea - An establishment that sells drinks, such as coffee and tea, as well as refreshments.

100-1000 - Restaurant

200 - Going Out-Entertainment

The Going Out-Entertainment category is a top level category for places commonly associated with entertainment, such as bars, cinemas, theatres, casinos and nightclubs.

This category contains the following level 2 categories:

  • Nightlife-Entertainment - An establishment that provides evening entertainment and usually serves alcoholic beverages.
  • Cinema - An establishment that shows movies through screen projection.
  • Theatre, Music and Culture - An establishment where various types of performing arts are presented.
  • Gambling-Lottery-Betting - An establishment that provides gambling entertainment.

350 - Natural and Geographical

The Natural and Geographical category is a top level category for natural or man-made areas of regional importance, such as bodies of water, mountains, forested areas and other geographic areas.

This category contains the following level 2 categories:

  • Body of Water - A natural and geographical feature of the earth's surface that is covered with water, such as a lake, river, stream or ocean.
  • Mountain or Hill - A natural and geographical feature that is higher than the surrounding land.
  • Undersea Feature - A natural or artificial feature that is below sea level.
  • Forest, Heath or Other Vegetation - A dense growth of trees, open uncultivated land or other large masses of vegetation.
  • Natural and Geographical - A feature not classified as other natural or geographic categories.

350-3500 - Body of Water

The Transport category is a top level category for places commonly associated with pedestrian and cargo transport facilities, including airports, rail yards and seaports.

This category contains the following level 2 categories:

  • Airport - A designated area that serves various aspects of aviation related sports, including gliders, recreational aircraft and model airplanes.
  • Public Transport - A facility for travelers who are travelling between stops on public transport.
  • Cargo Transportation - A facility that handles some aspect of the transportation of cargo freight.
  • Rest Area - An establishment along a motorway (controlled access road) that provides restrooms and parking.

400-4000 - Airport

500 - Accommodations

The Accommodations category is a top level category for places offering lodging accommodations, dwellings or similar living quarters to travellers, such as hotels, motels, resorts, cruise ships and campgrounds.

This category contains the following level 2 categories:

  • Hotel-Motel- A business that provides lodging or temporary living quarters.
  • Lodging - A business that provides lodging to the public generally without room service.

500-5000 - Hotel-Motel

The Leisure and Outdoor category is a top level category for places that are designated for sports, recreation, parking, beaches and other leisure and outdoor activities.

  • Outdoor-Recreation - Public land preserved and maintained for recreational use.
  • Leisure - A park that contains rides and/or other entertainment which may be based on a central theme.
