Additional Characters Published in UKE (Words of Scottish and Welsh origin)

Certain words of Scottish and Welsh origin contain plain text characters that do not appear in the standard UKE NT-SAMPA chart. There are two different options for handling these characters:

  • Reject the Phonetic Transcriptions that contain these phonemes. When replacing phonemes is not an option, you can instead choose to reject the respective phonetic transcriptions. This will have a limited impact on the quality of the pronunciation due to the limited number of phonemes.
  • Replace phonemes with similar phonemes in UKE. The following table describes the UKE phoneme that most closely phonetically relate to the symbol that is not available in the UKE NT-SAMPA chart. The replacement is most near to the target pronunciation within the capabilities of the speech software you are using.
