Roads feature class (Roads)

The Roads feature class is a subset of the Streets feature class that has a reduced set of attributes and a reduced set of geometries to improve redraw and query speed. The Roads feature class includes all roads with functional classes 1 through 5, but excludes footpaths and ferries.

For a description of the attributes OBJECTID, Shape, Shape_Length, and GlobalID, see Esri® system fields.

Field nameData typeDescription
STREET_NAMEString (100)Provides the full street name for each street segment, including abbreviated street type, prefix, and suffix, for example "Fred St S". When multiple names exist for a street segment, this field stores the name most useful for cartographic road display
LANGUAGE_CODEString (3)Specifies the language for the feature name
STREET_NAME_LATINString (100)STREET_NAME is a cartographic label for each street segment, using Latin character set, the full street name of the segment including the abbreviated street type, prefix, and suffix, for example "Fred St S". Where multiple names exist for a street segment, the data includes the one most likely to be useful for cartographic display of highways as identified where possible
LANGUAGE_CODE_LATINString (3)Specifies the language for the feature name, using Latin character set
FUNCTIONAL_CLASSInteger (4)The functional class of street segments defines each segment's role within the hierarchical street network dataset and determines logical and efficient routes in routing applications. Available values are:
FUNCTIONAL_CLASS = 1 roads allow high-volume, maximum-speed traffic movement between and through major metropolitan areas.
FUNCTIONAL_CLASS = 2 roads channel traffic to class 1 roads and support high-volume, high-speed traffic movement.
FUNCTIONAL_CLASS = 3 roads interconnect class 2 roads and provide high-volume traffic movement at a lower mobility level.
FUNCTIONAL_CLASS = 4 roads provide high-volume traffic movement at moderate speeds between neighbourhoods.
FUNCTIONAL_CLASS = 5 roads are below other functional classes for volume and movement and include walkways and special-purpose roads
BRIDGEString (1)Shows whether the street segment runs over a bridge. For this purpose, a bridge is a structure that allows a road, railroad, or walkway to pass over another road, railroad, water feature, or valley.
Y - Bridge
N - Not a bridge
Bridge = Y applies when the bridge is longer than 200 metres/656 feet. This can include smaller bridges when significant. Overpasses and underpasses receive Bridge = N
TUNNELString (1)Shows whether the street segment runs through a tunnel. For this purpose, a tunnel is a covered passageway through or under an obstruction.
Y - Tunnel
N - Not a tunnel
Tunnel = Y applies when the tunnel is longer than 200 metres/656 feet. This can include smaller tunnels when significant
PAVEDString (1)Shows whether the road surface supports regular vehicle traffic.
Y - Paved
N - Not paved
Roads made of concrete, asphalt, brick, or cobblestone are examples of Paved = Y. Roads surfaced with gravel, dirt, or grass are examples of Paved = N
RAMPString (1)Identifies connectors that provide access between roads that do not cross at grade.
Y - Ramp
N - Not a ramp
Ramp = Y also applies to roads connecting controlled-access roads (motorways and freeways)
ROUNDABOUTString (1)Shows whether the street segment belongs to a roundabout.
Y - Roundabout
N - Not a roundabout
CONSTRUCTION_STATUS_CLOSEDString (1)Shows whether construction closes the street segment for travel.
Y - Closed for construction
N - Not closed for construction
CONTROLLED_ACCESSString (1)Identifies roads with limited entrances and exits that support uninterrupted high-speed traffic flow. These roads form interstate and freeway networks in the U.S. and motorway networks in Europe.
Y - Controlled access
N - Not controlled access
TRAVEL_DIRECTIONString (1)Specifies legal travel direction on a navigable street segment (link).
B - Both directions
F - From reference node only
T - To reference node only
FOUR_WHEEL_DRIVEString (1)Shows whether only four-wheel drive vehicles should use the link.
Y - 4WD only
N - 2WD and 4WD vehicles
NULL - 4WD status unknown
NAME_ROUTE_TYPEInteger (4)Identifies route naming where the road name uses a route number
ISO_COUNTRY_CODEString (3)ISO 3 character country code
