Brazil Unsafe Areas

Unsafe Areas are certain areas in the world that are very unsafe for non-local drivers.
In Brazil, the unsafe areas are present in major cities, such as São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, Curitiba, Salvador, Recife, Guarulhos, etc.

To identify unsafe areas, the following attributes are coded:

Functional Class = 5
Speed Category = 7 (11-30 km/h)
Through Traffic = NO

Note: To identify Unsafe Areas, a combination of these 3 attributes described above is required but not enough. Further sources are necessary to support this identification.

If only a combination of these 3 attributes is used, the false flags of Unsafe Areas will be identified for instance, enclosed residential domains that carry the same attributes.

Below there are some examples of unsafe areas in Brazil and some routes near them.

- How to know whether a waypoint is in or out of an unsafe area?

- How to avoid adding a start/end/waypoint inside an unsafe area?

The safest process is to check database coding and see the attributes described above.

If it's not possible to access the database, satellite imagery can give some support to identify these areas, but there's not an exact rule for this.

The unsafe areas, in general, are comprised with absolutely dense constructions. In satellite imagery usually they form a gray area, where there seems to be no streets between allotments but only narrow alleyways.

Local knowledge is useful as well. Below see examples for Paraisópolis and Heliópolis in São Paulo/SP:

1) Paraisópolis (São Paulo/SP). This is approximately the Paraisópolis area:

Here wego, Route example:
Start Point: Avenida Hebe Camargo, 938, São Paulo-SP
End Point: Rua Dr. Fco. Thomaz de Carvalho, 529, São Paulo-SP

The routes suggested avoiding the unsafe area.

If a waypoint is added inside the unsafe area, we have the following route:
*(waypoint = Rua Pasquale Galupi, 1075, São Paulo-SP)

2) Heliópolis (São Paulo/SP). This is approximately the Heliópolis area:

Here wego, Route example:
Start point: Rua Protocolo, 358, Sacomã, São Paulo-SP
End point: Irante Delamare, 3236, Ipiranga, São Paulo-SP

All the 3 routes suggested avoiding the unsafe area.

If a waypoint is added inside the unsafe area, we have the following route:
*(waypoint = Rua da Alegria, 305, Sacomã, São Paulo-SP)
