Lieux-Dits in France are very small villages and are represented as Hamlets in HERE map.
More than 800 000 Hamlets or Lieux-Dits are present in the map data in France, mostly in rural areas (810 688 in Q1-26).
They are not considered as official city / commune (admin level 4) nor as Built-up area (admin level 5) and are not referenced in the official administrative hierarchy.
As Lieux-dits are the only name used to define the location, they are mandatory for destination entry or search in France.
They are coded as POI and as street name:
As Hamlet POI – 9998 GDF code: 9138
They are included for any inhabited small settlement, not listed as an official commune in official sources and does not have an official Built-up Area sign at the start of the village. (Note: Official Built-up Area signs in France are white with a red border and black text).
As Street Name:
All Hamlet names are coded with the street type ‘’Lieu-Dit’’
◦ If the Hamlet name is the only name on the link, they are coded as Explicatable(Yes), Common
*Name(Yes)***, and Vanity Name(Yes).
◦ If the Hamlet name is not the only name on the link, they are coded as Vanity Name(Yes) only.
The Hamlet street name is the same as the Hamlet POI name.**
